Lycée
Even though Jan Carson’s novel is fictional, it reminds us of our current society with its fears, conflicts and chaotic madness. Ballylack’s inhabitants are distant and scared of socializing due to strict religious conservatism. Religion is omnipresent. Indeed, in Ireland, religion is really important in the culture, but also as a source of tensions and divisions.
The mysterious disease worsens the situation. We can relate this to the COVID-19 pandemic which has recently fragmented our society.
Those divisions can be seen not only in Ireland or France, but all around the world. It’s not only about beliefs, it is also about fear of each other’s thoughts. For many years, women have been left out in religion and society. However, in the book, Hannah’s mom asserts herself
and goes forward, which is unusual in strict religious families. This novel was interesting and surprisingly related to issues of our modern world.
